The Best New WhatsApp Features You Might Have Missed

When you're using an app all day, it's easy to miss adding new features. You get notifications for updates, you update the app, and you continue to use it as usual. However, most WhatsApp updates include many new features.

To get these extra features, such as new group video calling or chat up, you'll need the latest version of WhatsApp. You can download the app from the relevant App Store, or update it on your phone if you already have it installed.

The Best New WhatsApp Features of 2020

Group Video and Voice Calls

WhatsApp voice calls and video calls are completely free. And now you're no longer limited to just chatting with each other thanks to a WhatsApp video feature. WhatsApp group voice and video calling allows you to talk to three other people at the same time.

To initiate a group call, you must first call someone. Once the call arrives, tap a little user icon in the upper right corner of the chat to add another participant. You cannot add two additional participants at once, so only add them one after the other.

It works seamlessly and is as reliable as making one-on-one voice calls. Of course, if you want to talk to more than four people, you can use Appear.in instead.

“Catch Up” on Group Chats (And More)

whatsapp features

Every WhatsApp user knows that their groups can do things with more features, whether it's to protect themselves from loud noises or to easily catch chats. WhatsApp has recently made a number of improvements to group chats that address key issues.

  • Catch-up: When you are mentioned by someone, or if you were away, a new @ button appears in the bottom right corner of the chat. It's easy to catch something you missed.
  • Protection From Re-Adding: WhatsApp groups do not require your consent to add you to a group. Now, if you leave this group, the administrator can't add you back immediately.
  • Description: For more formal groups, there is a descriptive field where administrators can set basic rules or define the purpose of the group.
  • Participant Search: An easy search field to find anyone.

Delete Messages to “Unsend” Mistakes

whatsup new feature

Who of us didn't want to take something back? WhatsApp is finally avoiding embarrassing situations by allowing you to delete messages in any chat. Here's how:

  • Long press to select a message.
  • From the options bar that appears, tap the Trash icon.
  • Choose whether you want to delete only for yourself or for everyone.

Like Gmail's "unsent" option, this feature is time-bound. It's not clear how long it will take you to delete a message, but you certainly can't delete text throughout the day. So the sooner you delete it the better.

Check Which Chats Are Using Up Storage Space

whatsup updates
With a regular number of media outlets on the WhatsApp, it eliminates a lot of storage space on your device. What's even more annoying is that WhatsApp doesn't allow you to store media on external storage.

To free up space, you will need to delete some items. WhatsApp has the option of which chat is taking up more space on your phone.

Go to Menu> Settings> Data & Storage Usage> Storage Usage. You'll see a list of your chat settings, which takes up a lot of storage space.

You can now join this chat, check the media files that have been exchanged, and start deleting what you don't need to free up storage space.

Share Your Live Location

Whatsup new version
"Where are you?" Probably the most typed phrase in text messaging history. To avoid this constant exchange, you can now share your living space with someone else with the help of WhatsApp.

Here's how to share your location directly on the WhatsApp:

Open a chat and tap the attached icon.
Tap Location.
Tape share live location.
Choose to share for 15 minutes, one hour, or eight hours.
It's very simple and makes things a lot easier for anyone waiting for you. Of course, if you don't want to broadcast it live, you can just share your location on the WhatsApp as a one-time item.

Set a WhatsApp Status

The Best New WhatsApp Features

If you’ve used Snapchat or know about Instagram Stories, WhatsApp Status will seem quite familiar. It’s a visual message—a video, photo, or GIF—that is broadcast to all your contacts.

Status displays its tab next to chats and calls. In this pane, you will see all the statuses updated by your contacts. They are active for 24 hours from the time of upload. People can upload multiple times a day.

  • To see the next or previous status of a contact, tap on the right or left side of the screen, respectively.
  • To go to the next contact status, swipe left.
  • To comment on a status, swipe up.
To create your status, tap the camera icon next to the status pane or the green floating icon in the bottom right corner. You can choose to shoot a new photo or video (up to 45 seconds) from your gallery or add a photo or GIF. You can draw or write on statuses, and even add emojis.

It's just like SnapChat or Instagram Stories. You can see who has seen your status, and anyone can respond to the status. And there are plenty of options to limit who can see your status.

New WhatsApp feature
  • You can send the status individually to a person or a group chat you’re part of.
  • You can add it as your public status, which is seen by all of your contacts.
  • Tapping the cog wheel next to “My Status” in Android, or the “Privacy” setting in iOS, lets you choose specific contacts to share with.
  • You can also choose to share the status with everyone except a few specific contacts.

And just like WhatsApp encrypts all messages, Status updates are also protected from snooping eyes.

Two-Factor Authentication

whatsapp new updates
You can never be careful about your personal data on the Internet. Two-factor authentication (2FA) now requires protection. Enable 2FA now to make sure no one else can hijack your WhatsApp account.

Go to Settings> Accounts> Two-Step Verification and follow the instructions. You will be asked to include your e-mail address as well as a six-digit passcode. The next time you register your phone number with the WhatsApp, you will be asked for the key in this passcode or use the email address entered to access your account.

Make the passcode something you remember, but not related to your real phone number. For example, don't use the last six digits of your phone number as your passcode. Maybe your birthday isn't a great idea.

Change Numbers and Keep Your WhatsApp Data

The Best New WhatsApp Features
If you have changed your phone number, you can still retain all the data of the same WhatsApp account. Can use Go to Settings> Account> Change number, and follow the instructions.

It is best to back up the WhatsApp completely before you start. To do so, go to Settings> Chats> Chat Backup. Use both WhatsApp backup server and Google Drive for your backup.

We strongly recommend that you read the WhatsApp guide to change your phone number before proceeding. Continue this process and open it on your computer or other screen.

Once you change your number, the process is completely smooth for all your friends. They will see you in their WhatsApp list as before, even though your number has changed.

Search and Share GIFs

New WhatsApp feature

You can now search and add GIF in response, which is great, because GIF is the language of the Internet.

Tap on the emoji icon, and you'll see two tabs in the pane. The first one has emojis, as it always has, while the second one lets you search for GIFs, a large collection of reaction GIFs. You never have to leave the chat window, because the app searches. However, this feature will not work when you do not have an active internet connection.

Of course, you can continue adding GIFs from your storage. In the gallery attachments, you'll see a way to upload a third tab for photos, videos and GIFs.

Send Offline Messages on iPhone

new whatsup update

For a long time, Android users enjoyed a feature that iPhone users did not: Offline messaging. If an Android user did not have an active internet connection, they could still reply to messages that are sent whenever they are contacted. But not on the iPhone yet.

In 2017, the company added this capability, so you can type and send these messages while offline. They will stay on your phone until you get an internet connection, at which point they will be sent automatically.

Tag Individuals in Group Chats With @ Mentions

whatsup update version
WhatsApp groups can be overwhelming. Opening the app to see 300 new messages, you don't know if you really need to read them all. In a new update, WhatsApp is adding the issue of information overload by mentioning "@".

When you type the @ symbol in a group chat, a menu will pop up listing all the people in that group. Select the person you want. Now that person will receive a notification that they have been mentioned in the chat.

Notifications from @ mentions show up even if the person has muted the group chat. For your own @ mentions, you might see your phone number instead of your name. To fix this, add yourself as a contact in your smartphone’s address book.

Send and Receive GIFs

WhatsApp New Features
GIFs are the language of the Internet, and now you can talk to them on the WhatsApp. When you go to Attachments> Gallery, you'll see the GIFs option next to Photos and Videos. Add GIF to send it to chat. If the recipient is using a synced version of the WhatsApp, they will be able to tap GIF to play it.

Snapchat-Style Image Editing

whatsup update version
The new trend in sharing photos is to interpret them. SnapChat started justifying adding emojis or some custom text. Then Instagram copied it with stories. Now WhatsApp is also copying this feature.

When you're sharing a photo on the WhatsApp, you'll see three options in the corner:

  1. Emoji Icon: Add an emoji to the image. You can also visit them.
  2. Text Icon: Add some funky text to your image.
  3. Paint Brush: After choosing the color, draw on your picture with your finger.

New Ways to Shoot Photos and Videos

features of whatsup
WhatsApp has three new ways to make it easier to take photos and videos.

  1. When you use the front-facing camera to take selfies, you can now switch to "Flash". This completes your screen and adds more light to your face.
  2. In camera mode, tap twice on the screen to switch between front and rear cameras. It works for both video and photo.
  3. When shooting videos, slide two fingers up or down the screen to zoom in or out, respectively.

Quote Messages for Clear Replies

WhatsApp New Feature
In a free-spirited conversation, it becomes difficult to know which sentence someone is answering. A new feature adds context to replies to the original message.

When you are replying to a message, press that message longer. At the top you will find an "Reply" arrow button. Tap on it, and type your answer. When you send it, it will refer to the original message and include your reply.

That way, others don't have to wonder what point you're replying to, or scroll down to see the message.

Make Text Bold, Italics, and Strikethrough

WhatsApp updates new version
Make the text bold by adding an asterisk: add an asterisk (*) before the first letter and after the last letter, so that everything in the middle looks bold.

For example, * MakeUseOf is great * will appear when MakeUseOf is great.

Make the text partial by adding an underscore: Add an underscore (_) before the first letter and after the last letter, so that everything doesn't look out of place.

For example, _MakeUseOf is great_which will appear as MakeUseOf is great.

Add a strike to the text by adding an under score: Add a tailed (~) before the first letter and after the last letter, so that everything appears along the line passing through it.

For example, ~ MakeUseOf is great. Appear as MakeUseOf is great.

Control Your Privacy on WhatsApp

WhatsApp New Feature -- Facebook Share Information Privacy
WhatsApp shared its information with Facebook. At one point, you received a message with a graphic note about it. Maybe you ignored it, maybe you didn't pay attention and accepted it. But if you're not careful, WhatsApp will share your personal profile (but not your phone number or chats) with Facebook.

Thankfully, blocking WhatsApp information with Facebook is an easy process. Go to Settings> Accounts and uncheck the box next to "Share my account information".

Control Download Settings for Data or Wi-Fi

whatsapp network usage

WhatsApp is aware of how many of its users are worried about the amount of data it uses while connecting to the internet through 4G. A new setting allows you to minutely control this data usage.

Go to Options (Three-dot icon) > Settings > Data and Storage Usage and you will find extended options to control how and when media is auto-downloaded. So when you’re using mobile data, you can set it to download only images; while roaming, no media; and when you’re on Wi-Fi, to download everything.

There’s also an option for “Low Data Usage” when making a WhatsApp Voice Call, although this was already present in earlier versions and is not new.

Back Up Chats to Google Drive

whatsapp chat backup
You can restore your WhatsApp chat history in a few steps. But what if you lost your phone, or got a new one, or had to reconfigure your existing storage? Although WhatsApp supports regular chat history, there's an easier (and better) way: Google Drive.
WhatsApp for Android lets you automatically backup your chat logs to Google Drive. Go to Menu> Settings> Chats & Calls> Chat Backup> Google Drive settings and configure it. I'd recommend daily backups (you can choose weekly, monthly, or manual), including Wi-Fi only (which saves data costs), and videos.

Mark Chats as Read or Unread

whatsapp new version
Now you can hide your WhatsApp status or when you were last seen, which is great. But for your own personal use, sometimes, you want to mark a message as read.

Think about it in the email. The ability to right-click and mark unread (which you probably don't use the amazing features of Gmail is a great way to remind yourself that you haven't fully registered email) , That you need to answer it, or that it is important in some way.
Now you can do the same in WhatsApp. Select a chat with any contact or group, long press on it and tap "Mark as unread". You can do the opposite - long press a chat you haven't read and you'll see the "Mark as read" option, so it looks like you've never left a message without opening the chat. Have read

Note that this does not mean changing the status of the message for your recipient. The recipient still sees that you have read the message. It only reflects the unread in your own phone.

Mark as read / unread which has also made a place in the WhatsApp web.

Use Custom Notifications for People and Groups

whatsapp
Some contacts and chat groups are more important than others, aren't they? OK, then set different notification alerts for them. WhatsApp has removed custom notifications.

One of the main purposes of blocking mobile disturbances is to allow the right people to go through everyone and eliminate it, and that is the feature. Open a chat, tap the title bar, and you'll find a custom notification option.
In it, you can set notification tone, vibration effect, popup notification, and LED light color for new messages. For WhatsApp voice calls, you will only get custom ringtones and vibrations.
